We are happy to announce a unique new artist residency program focused in Mayan Pottery, film, and anthropology studies in the Yucatan Peninsula.
The legendary Espadas Family is open to receive students from around the globe and share their wisdom that has been passed on for more than 6 generations
A one of a kind Artist residency!
There are only few spots to learn this ancient technique while exploring some of the best the Yucatan has to offer.
Where does the residency take place?
-We have 2 options for accomodation during the residency:
A private studio and a room in shared house, both in prime location downtown Valladolid.

-Pottery classes are held in Uayma, an historic town 20 minutes from Valladolid
When is the residency happening?
We are currently accepting applications for residencies March- December 2021. If you are interested, please click below to submitt your application.
What is the duration of the residency and the pottery classes?
Daily Classes usually are 1.5 hrs.
We recommend the minimum time it takes to experience the culture and learn the basics of Mayan Pottery is 1 week (intense mode) but we suggest you to have at least 10 clases in order to learn all of the process and be able to make some pieces. This can be done over a 2 week period.
If you want to have a comprehensive experience we encourage you to stay for 4 weeks. That way you can plan your clasess throughout the month and have time to enjoy the nature and historical sites the Yucatan has to offer.
What is the cost of the residency?

What is included and what’s not?
The prices listed above are only for accomodation and classes. They don’t include air tickets, food, and transportation to and from Valladolid.
What to know about Valladolid and the Mayan pottery classes ?
Valladolid is a cultural-historical center in the Yucatan. It was one of the first cities built by the Spanish in 1545 so there are a lot of cultural landmarks, inclduing churches, cenotes, and the famous Convent of San Bernardino de Siena.
Food
Valladolid is a very afordable place, you can get a full regional meal for 6 usd. The mercado offers amazing fresh fruits and Vegatables at super affordable prices. We suggest you to buy and try everything you haven’t like the fruits mamey, caimito, zapote or the mayan pumpkin.
Transportation
Ado bus is very effective and affordable way to get to and from Valladolid (8 USD one way from Tulum). We can also arrange pickup in a private car from the Cancun airport for an aditional cost (90 USD one way)
Taxi to Uayama where the classes are held costs 12 usd round trip. You can get a shared van for only 2 USD per trip. The distance between Valladolid and Uayama is 20 minutes by car.
Pottery Classes
The classes can be tailored to your needs and travel plans. We look forward to recieving your application and discussing your individual program.
Can I bring my partner or a friend?
Totally, our room has plenty of space and has 1 king bed and an individual one. So if you have a partner or a travel mate or friend who wants to share this great experience, they are welcome.
Just remember that if they want to take classes they will need to pay separately at the rates listed above.
How far is it from Tulum?
Valladolid is 1.5 hrs from Tulum’s coast. We can help you find affordable accomodation in Tulum if you want to visit there for a weekend or more.
CoVid 19 Precautions
We want to ensure the safety of our residents and the locals. We ask that you arrive after confirming you are CoVid free. We also ask that you maintain appropriate distancing while interacting with the Espada family and other locals as well as wear protecting face covering when in close proximity or indoors.

Shadi Yousefian
We are so happy and grateful to share with you images and testimonial of one of our best residents ever. Shadi Yousefian is the first artist in taking our new artist residency program focused in exploring the Uayma Pottery Program with the Espadas Family the wisdom keeps of this ancient technique. She stayed for a month and in collaboration with the family and his partner Ardy they created a stunning piece called “Closesness”.
