Tulum Art Club & Holistika Present: International Open Call for Artists!

In 2016, Tulum Art Club and Holistika Tulum created the region's first open-air museum, a visionary space where internationally renowned artists brought to life murals and sculptures along a 2-hectare jungle path. Over time, this unique collaboration became a haven for creativity and reflection, intertwining art, nature, and wellness. Now, it is time to refresh and renew this concept, building a new narrative that continues to explore the profound connections between human nature, personal transformation, and our relationship with the environment.

We invite artists from around the world to participate in this next chapter—to reshape and reimagine the open-air museum at Holistika. Whether you are a muralist looking to modify or reinvent existing murals, or an artist with a vision for new structures that immerse viewers in a multi-sensory experience, this is your opportunity to contribute to a transformative artistic journey. Proposals that include interactive elements, allowing visitors to engage with the work and be submerged in the experience, will be given special consideration.

Join us as we reimagine this iconic space, creating art that fosters connection, transformation, and reflection.

Our overarching theme, "Connection, Transformation & Reflection," is a call to explore the deep relationship between self, community, nature, and the larger universe. Artists will dive into the introspective journey that defines the Tulum experience, blending art with Holistika’s ethos of wellness and spiritual growth.

Sub-Themes:

To inspire and guide applicants, we offer the following sub-themes that will help you frame your vision and conceptualize your pieces. You may choose to explore one or blend several of these themes in your proposal:

  1. Transformation & Rebirth
Explore the idea of metamorphosis, growth, and renewal, both personal and environmental. Whether it’s nature’s endless cycles or humanity’s ability to change and adapt, this theme invites interpretations of rebirth and transformation as essential parts of existence.

  2. Sacred Nature: The Power of the Elements
Reflect on the profound connection between humans and the natural elements—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Spirit. This theme opens the door to exploring the sacredness of nature and the healing power of the elements, drawing inspiration from indigenous wisdom and environmental consciousness.

  3. Unity Through Diversity
Celebrate the beauty and strength of diversity—cultural, social, and spiritual that Tulum offers. This sub-theme seeks to highlight how human connection thrives on the richness of different traditions, experiences, and perspectives, encouraging artists to explore harmony in diversity.

  4. Consciousness & The Cosmos
Invite visitors to reflect on their place within the greater cosmic narrative. Whether it’s through abstract representations of the universe or surreal interpretations of mindfulness and cosmic awareness, this theme will encourage a deeper connection between individuals and the infinite.

  5. Echoes of Ancestry: Past, Present, Future
Delve into the connections between the past and future, honoring ancient wisdom while imagining humanity’s future. This theme invites artists to explore the rich ancestral heritage of the region and its continued relevance, blending historical references with forward-thinking concepts.

  6. Harmony in Chaos
How do we find peace amid turbulence? This sub-theme invites artists to explore the delicate balance between chaos and tranquility, both in the natural world and in human life. It’s a celebration of resilience and mindfulness in the face of adversity.

  7. Invisible Connections
Examine the unseen forces that bind us—emotional bonds, energy between living things, or the intricate ecosystems that make life possible. This theme is particularly well-suited for artists working with sound, light, and digital mediums, creating experiences that reflect the invisible threads of connection between humans and the universe.

We encourage proposals that include interactive elements, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the art experience. Whether it's through touch, sound, movement, or other sensory engagement, ideas that invite visitors to actively participate or feel submerged in the experience will be given preference.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Muralists: Redesign or reimagine the murals along the jungle path, breathing new life into the space with themes of connection, transformation, and reflection.

  • Sculptors: Create interactive or reflective sculptures that resonate with nature and invite contemplation.

  • Augmented Reality Artists: Integrate digital art experiences that interact with the physical surroundings, adding a surreal layer to the existing environment.

  • Sound & Light Designers: Create immersive installations that transform the jungle space with sound or light, enhancing the experience of wellness and human connection.

What We Offer:

  • Financial support, including a stipend, accommodation, and meals, as well as full coverage of production costs for each selected project.

  • A base stipend of $1,000 USD per artist is offered; however, we understand that some proposals may require a larger budget. If your project exceeds this standard fee, feel free to include your estimated costs in your proposal, and we can discuss potential arrangements.

  • 1. Who can apply for this open call?

Artists from all over the world are welcome to apply. We are looking for muralists, sculptors, digital artists, sound artists, light designers, and those working with interactive or immersive experiences. Both emerging and established artists are encouraged to submit proposals.

    2. What is the theme of the open call?

The overarching theme is "Connection, Transformation & Reflection." We encourage artists to interpret these themes in creative and innovative ways.

    3. Can I propose to redo an existing mural?

Yes! If you are a muralist, you can either propose to redo an existing mural entirely or suggest modifications and additions that change its shape and concept. We’re looking for fresh perspectives that fit the theme and elevate the space.

    4. What if I want to build something from scratch?

We welcome proposals for new structures, such as walls, sculptures, or installations built from the ground up. These can take any form, but they should fit the natural surroundings and be durable for at least 5 years in the Tulum climate.

    5. Will my proposal get preference if it includes interactive elements?

Yes! All proposals must include a sketch, mood board, or graphical representation of your concept. We give preference to projects that are well-expressed and demonstrate clarity in both vision and execution. For muralists, your work will either replace or modify an existing mural on-site. You’ll have support for sourcing materials and technical assistance during production.
