SeaWalls: Murals for Oceans – Tulum 2014
15+ Murals in 1 Week to Inspire Ocean Conservation
In 2014, Tulum Art Club proudly partnered with the internationally renowned SeaWalls: Murals for Oceansinitiative by PangeaSeed Foundation, bringing together a dynamic group of artists, activists, and ocean lovers to create a powerful visual campaign for marine conservation.
Over the course of one week, more than 15 large-scale murals were painted across Tulum by artists from around the world, each highlighting critical issues affecting our oceans — from coral reef bleaching and plastic pollution to overfishing and species extinction.
This impactful collaboration transformed the town into an open-air gallery, using public art as a tool for education and environmental advocacy. The vibrant murals sparked conversations, brought awareness to the local community and tourists alike, and left a lasting mark on the cultural and ecological identity of Tulum.
Purpose
The project aimed to:
Raise awareness about pressing ocean-related issues through accessible and inspiring public art
Engage the local community in conversations around environmental responsibility
Amplify the voices of artists as powerful storytellers for conservation
Celebrate Tulum’s connection to the sea, promoting the protection of the Mesoamerican Reef — the second-largest barrier reef in the world
This collaboration remains a foundational moment in Tulum’s creative history — where art, ecology, and activism came together to protect what connects us all: the ocean.
